Event Details

A teacher from FUMC recalls a conversation with a student who came to school with mismatched socks.  The teacher had a good relationship with the child and was teasing him about his socks.  The little boy sheepishly looked into his teacher’s eyes and said, “It was hard to find my socks in the back window of our car.”  The car was the family’s “home” at the time.

Cars, tents, shelters and prohibitive high cost/low quality rental properties for “homes” continue to be tragic realities of low access to affordable housing.   And who defines what “affordable” means?

Sunday, January 15th during the Education Hour in the Commons, Meridith Dillon from Front Porch Investments, will share with us the need, the progress and the opportunities that we all have to be part of the solution.  Speakers from Front Porch Investments have participated in two of the Poverty Education and Advocacy Team fall Forums and attendees were challenged and inspired!  January 15th we will have an opportunity to continue the conversation with Ms. Dillon who is the Executive Director of Front Porch Investments.  This forum is sponsored by our Salt and Light team.

Mismatched socks can be a fun fashion statement for a child who has a drawer full of socks, but imagine a child or grandchild of yours living in a car, grabbing for socks before heading for school .  It doesn’t have to be this way!  Come and learn on January 15th, 9:30 a.m. in the Commons.
