There’s Something About Your Presence

People sometimes ask me what they have to do to become a member. Some ask it with eagerness and desire in their eyes; some ask with great skepticism and genuine fear. I reassure them that it’s not like their college fraternity or sorority. We don’t do hazing. There will be no humiliating costumes to run around our campus wearing. No repulsive food to eat. No drinking contests. No physical torture or exertion is required. We don’t insist that you recite the Apostle’s Creed or name all the books of the Bible. We don’t even ask you the names of John Wesley’s 14 siblings. You don’t have to ascribe to a particular atonement theology. You don’t even have to know what an atonement theology is.
